At Edward Gaut Violins, carefully selected, high-quality horsehair is used. I take particular care to achieve an even spread of hair across the bow, from the handle to the tip, with the appropriate tension for each bow.

2-Hour Express Bow Rehair Service
For players who need their bow back quickly, I offer a 2-hour express bow rehair service, by appointment only.
This service is particularly useful for professional musicians, regular players and anyone travelling from further afield. If you’re travelling to or from a performance near Bristol, the express service can allow you to have your bow rehaired while you’re here rather than making a separate journey.

- Book your appointment. Phone or email to arrange a convenient time to drop off your bow.
- Choose your service. Let me know whether you require the standard rehair or the 2-hour express service.
- Collect your bow. Your bow will be ready at the agreed collection time. For express rehairs, please phone in advance to book a 2-hour time slot.
Sending bows in the post.
I regularly receive bows by post from customers throughout the UK. If you are unable to visit the workshop, your bow can be securely packaged and sent to me for rehairing or repair.
I recommend using a sturdy 90cm length of drainpipe as a protective outer tube. Wrap the bow carefully in bubble wrap, securing it at several points without placing pressure on the bow.
The tube should be securely padded at both ends to prevent the bow moving during transit. Please include a note with your name, telephone number, email address, return address and details of the work required.

FAQ
How do I know if my bow needs a rehair?
There are several signs that a bow may need rehairing:
The bow begins to skate over the strings rather than grip properly, resulting in strange harmonics or whistles. More rosin doesn’t necessarily help!
The hair is old, fragile or breaking regularly.
The bow appears bent or twisted under tension but returns to straight when the tension is released, which may indicate the bow needs attention.
How much is a rehair?
The standard service is, Violin bows £75, Viola bows £80, Cello bows £85, Bass Bow £110.
Do I need to book an express rehair or can I just turn up?
I strongly advise customers to phone ahead and book a 2 hour slot.
What can I do while I wait for an express rehair?
There are a good selection of cafes, pubs, shops nearby or if the weather is kind, why not enjoy a countryside walk. We are spoiled for choice with the local landscape.
